With a global pandemic causing millions to lose their jobs and forcing some businesses to shut their doors for good, many people are considering a career change and maybe even heading into a new industry. Switching industries can be a daunting task, but whether it is a necessity or something you have wanted for a while, the following tactics aim to lighten the load.
- Set Goals
Why are you changing industries? Why are you picking this company in particular? What can you contribute to this new field? These are all questions you should have answers to. Do not just focus on the past; no employer wants to hear that the only reason you are applying to work for them is that your previous industry is declining, and you have no other choice.
Think of this as an exciting new opportunity to make a difference in your life; you can finally go after the job of your dreams! Focus on what you want your future to look like and set goals accordingly.
2. Learn the Lingo
Just like if you were traveling to a foreign country to ease the process, it is important to learn the language and understand the culture. Each industry is different. You must become familiar with the common words and phrases, the different company cultures, the trends and what the future of the industry looks like.
Evaluate what skills you already have and which you will need to acquire to work in this industry. Are there any courses you will have to take? A new software to learn? A quick Google search can give you tons of options on how to do pretty much anything. You can also do informational interviews to learn more about the company and what skills and abilities they are looking for.
3. Connect
Connections are so essential to make it in a new industry. They can provide you with valuable insights and firsthand experience on what the job is like. Do not worry if you do not personally know someone in the industry; there are tons of ways to make new contacts.
You can connect with people through social media or meet people at networking events & trade shows. Talk to potential employers on LinkedIn. Just step out of your current bubble and you would be surprised at how many people are willing to share their expertise with you.
4. Stay Motivated
Breaking into a new industry is never easy. People are going to ask you questions; be ready for them. People make assumptions about certain industries and jobs, so be prepared to disprove them. Show employers, you are ready for the challenge by illustrating how you have overcome difficult situations in the past.
Demonstrate your commitment to this new field and do not sell yourself short. While your skill set may differ from what the company is used to, it does not mean you do not have something unique to offer. Focus on your strengths.
